"I don't understand why a law needs to be passed."
If you don't pass a law it will never happen because the buss companies see $$ as more valuable than a human life.

As a bus driver I have mixed feelings about the seat belts being install on buses. Right now I have 8 seat belts and 4 bus designed car seats and that makes me nervous. Most of the time the children don't put the belts on correctly and they have too much slack. Some of them are not strong enough to pull the belt tight enough. The bus driver is not allowed to leave the seat either. If he/she should HAVE to leave the seat the bus needs to be shut off and secured. Teachers at some of the schools WILL NOT get on buses either. That would require EVERY SINGLE bus to have a BUS MONITOR. That would be most costly then the original idea of just installing seat belts. It really needs to be looked at long and hard. Every accident is different. My heart goes out to the family of Vikas Parikh in Rocky Hill.
The School Board has the contracting authority and can write seat belts into the contracts for the School Bus Companies. That being the case, I don't understand why a law needs to be passed. Could it be the School Boards are avoiding their contractual duty and hiding behind the State Legislature?
I gives me pause to think these people are in charge of our childrens education.

"" You are putting the wallets before the lives of children. ...""

Ahhhhhhh...the pathetic "priceless" mentality, like the Mastercard commercials........* whistles *

THIS thinking is what got us to this pathetic point in this country, from health care to education..........we cant afford anything anymore.........

NOBODY is saying the safety of the kids isnt important, but things have to be thought through in this " click-it-or ticket" world.....we also live in a world that has a price tag on EVERYTHING, so the "priceless" mentality is meaningless AND unsustainable....look around you....we are living proof now, we are living the nightmare.....

No one mentioned the cost except for the overprotective people that cling to the nonsense of better safe than sorry. Between current bus safety standards and how rare injuries are, the millions spent on belts won't show results until about the year 2045. Far more kids are injured by the parents hitting other kids when they drive THEIR kid to school. If you want to see what is a bigger risk to kids safety look in your car's mirror.
