Hartford, Conn. (AP) – Lawmakers are moving closer to stopping the tradition of renaming the Connecticut National Guard training camp with each new governor.
The Public Safety Committee voted Thursday to send a bill to the Senate that would permanently name the facility, located in the Niantic section of East Lyme, as Camp Niantic. It is currently named Camp Rell after Gov. M. Jodi Rell.
Rep. Ed Jutila, who represents East Lyme and proposed the bill, says he’s often asked why the state spends money to change the camp’s name every time a new governor is elected. He says he’s been
told the state spends anywhere from a couple thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars on the name change.
Under this bill, the training facility would be renamed Camp Niantic after Rell leaves office in January.
