Court upholds 'under God' in Pledge

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A federal appeals court in San Francisco has ruled that the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance is constitutional.
In a 2-1 ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel rejected arguments by Sacramento atheist Michael Newdow that the phrase violates the separation between church and state.
Newdow’s previous lawsuit against the pledge in public schools reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 2004. But the high court said he didn’t have the legal standing to make the challenge on behalf of
his daughter.
So Newdow, who is a doctor and lawyer, filed a similar challenge on behalf of other parents who objected to their children being required to recite “under God.”
In a separate ruling Thursday, the appeals court also upheld the use of the phrase “In God We Trust” on coins and currency.

ViVa AZTLAN! SI SE PUEDE! SI SE PUEDE!
So you were able to guess that I'm in favor of them upholding this decision? Hmm. Who would have thought!
'Able is a godless, unpatriotic, anti-american leftist. Say it ain't so!'
I am quite Godless, thank you for noticing. I am unpatriotic because there no reason to have jingoism, as it only leads to elitism, hatred and violence. Also, I am not anti-American, as I love Americans, I am anti-America.
Now get it right or pay the price homeslice!
'Who cares what Able believes? This country was founded on religious freedom . . . remember?'
Agreed. I'm all for y'all believing in God, or Gods, or donkeys for that matter. To have the term God appear on money, anthem's and other cultural phenoms are merely examples of ceremonial deism and hold no true religious meaning any longer.
To teach God or any other religion in class, or in other governmental institutions I highly object to, as that would violate a separation of Church and state. But, not this.
God is the word Gold without the letter L in it.
When used on the currancy.
Tis the gold that holds up the monies.
Everything that is not man or woman made is made by God,trees, flowers, grass, oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, repyiles, mammels, humans, birds of the air.
Thats who God was in the Bible,it isn`t hard to go figure.

Actually, America was founded as a utopia for those seeking religious freedom from the Church of England. There was no religious freedom in the colonies. You belonged to one church, lived by their laws, and faced public humiliation and imprisonment or being "warned out" if you didn't "fall into line." Have you read The Scarlet Letter, although fiction it is a great example of how badly the "church" treated people int he colonies.
Furthermore, Anglicans living and practicing in the colonies were persecuted by the governing bodies including the courts which, shockingly enough, were run by the church.
Catholics, on the other hand were persecuted and looked suspiciously upon right up the the mid part of the 20th century. Their churches were burned, etc.
So, what is this "religious freedom" you speak of Alice? The freedom of one church to persecute others in the name of "their" religion?
Now, to the point...
I agree with most of what Able said as well. I choose never to say the pledge, not because it contains the word "God" but, because I won't pledge my allegiance to any nation as doing so implies that I believe the nation is above "God." I too love the American people, but am anti-America.
So, I wont say the pledge and I won't sing the national anthem.
It is an early day for all of us, I have the flu and am work, I fully expect spelling and grammatical mistakes from me today! :D
'Newdow is the devil. I am beginning to think Able is his son.'
That could explain why I am always so warm.
'Todd is anti-America and anti-religion, why am I not surprised?'
I am curious how he and I are both anti-American, when we're living and reading by the same laws you are.
'The only thing making our dollar worth anything is God.'
Well, the concept of money is about as real.
"I choose never to say the pledge, not because it contains the word "God" but, because I won't pledge my allegiance to any nation as doing so implies that I believe the nation is above "God.""
How is that saying that I am anti religion when I believe in God?
Yes, because Jesus didn't overturn the tables of the money changers in the temple.
Republican Motto... GOD, GUNS, MONEY... sounds pretty contradictory to me.
Ironic, because today, 2010, 1 EUR = $1.3758.
Under Bushie poo...
In 2007 it was 1 EUR = $1.4505.
In 2008 1 EUR = $1.54.
Um, so explain how 1 EUR = $1.3758 under Obama is worse than 1 EUR = $1.54 under Bush.
Oh, and it was Bernake who threw money out of the sky on the behest of the previous administration.
Bones - I am proud to identify myself as not saying the pledge OR singing the national anthem or standing during it. Thanks for at least agreeing that I have the right NOT to say or acknowledge either.
At least I know where is now. Probably the same place Noah's Ark is.
'I assume this will make Sen. Fasano and those very wealthy atheists he does all that legislative work for very sad.'
Well, what is the assumption that all Atheists or Agnostics care?
'There are some places on earth where you would be stoned to death for not believing in God.'
There are also places on Earth you're murdered for being homosexual. There are also places on Earth you're murdered for being of another race. Interesting, that one place has had both of those, and we live in it.
'Those that choose not to say the pledge, please leave the room or identify yourselves.'
Why should we have to do anything? We have the same right to not say it, as you have to say it. Or does freedom of speech only work for those for whom you support?
It's people like you - in power that are screwing up this country !
Obviously someone doesn't understand the political spectrum and the varying degree as to which ideology shifts amongst it. Perhaps, you should read my posts, understand my viewpoints and quite possibly use a reference model to compare my thoughts before assuming that I am the only word you know, 'communist.' Also, if this were 1950 perhaps that would be, for lack of a better word, 'evil' but we no longer need to be trapped by the fear of ignorance, that for which you apparently hold a large stake it.
Now please, once you're able to have a fruitful discussion and understand the nature as to which ideologies shift, we'll continue, but until that point your words lack any merit, value or credibility for this blog. You've failed at making a succinct point that can allow for the conversation to continue in a normal manner, therefore you have no purpose in speaking. Shall I stop you? No. But, that does not mean your words mean anything.
Also, I do not hate America or Americans. I hate American policies and their effect upon the citizens of this nation and those who do not live within it. Perhaps if you held similar concerns and were able to voice them, we'd be able to come to consensus on solutions, but you wish to merely vilify options that fit your narrow view of reality. Therefore you shall be stuck in a continual loop of misery and discontent. I feel for you.
So, I am sorry to say it is not I who screws up this country nor is it Todd. It is individuals unwilling to make sacrifices, unwilling to make change and unwilling to realize when a way of life is not sustainable. Till the day those realize it, we are all done for.
