Hartford, Conn. (WTNH) – Governor Jodi Rell announced, Saturday, the statewide relief effort she started with the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) to address the critical needs facing the children of Haiti in the aftermath of devastating earthquake has raised $36,281 to date.
Governor Rell and CAS began the special fundraising appeal immediately following the earthquake that struck Haiti in January.
“What our schools have done in terms of fundraising to help children in Haiti has been truly remarkable. We live in a tremendously generous state and that includes the thousands of caring and compassionate school-aged children who responded to this call for help,” said Governor Rell. “Thanks to students, parents, teachers and staff, we have showed the people of Haiti and countries around the world that Connecticut cares.”
Governor Rell continued, “When we started this ambitious fundraising drive on January 20, I was confident the state would respond with the same outpouring of concern and willingness to help those in need. These schoolchildren beat all expectations and they are continuing to raise money.”
She said that Connecticut “residents of all ages never let us down in times of crisis and this is just another reason why I am proud to be Governor of this great state - and we are not finished yet.”
The Governor emphasized this is a long-term effort and donations are still being accepted. The Governor’s Office along with the CAS will assess the relief efforts so far when it comes to the children of Haiti and designate where the funds should be directed.
She already visited Keigwin Middle School in Middletown to personally thank the students for their contribution to the state’s Haiti relief efforts. Some of the other schools who are participating in this special fundraising appeal include Aiken, Norfeldt and Webster Hill Elementary Schools in West Hartford; Wilbur Cross Elementary School in Bridgeport; John Trumbull Primary School in Oakville, Ellen P. Hubbell School in Bristol; and many others.
To contribute to this fund, please visit any local Bank of America branch in Connecticut to make a deposit in the account set up by the Connecticut Association of Schools for the state’s Haiti relief efforts.
