Lawmakers want say on tuition increases

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Some Connecticut legislators say the General Assembly needs to know about tuition increases at state universities before learning about it in the news.
The legislature’s higher education committee on Thursday heard testimony on a bill that would require the boards of trustees for community-technical colleges, Connecticut State University System and University of Connecticut to notify the committee whenever a change in tuition is being considered.
The bill also allows lawmakers to comment on proposals to increase, reduce or maintain tuition rates.
It comes as Connecticut students face 5.7 to 6.4 percent tuition and fee increases at the various state-run schools for the 2010-11 academic year.
CSU Chancellor David Carter says the bill is unnecessary and trustees are willing to provide lawmakers with the information earlier in the process.
