Lieberman on Obama's Afghan decision

(WTNH) – (WTNH) - Members of the Obama cabinet went before the Senate Armed Services Committee today to answer questions on the war in Afghanistan. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) sits on that committee and he talked exclusively with Chief Political Correspondent Mark Davis after the hearing.
Davis: “So senator, after hearing from these three are you convinced that the president is making the right move here?”
Lieberman: “I am, I thought the president gave a very strong speech last night, he obviously thought a lot about this policy before he reached it. I think he really showed some political courage because in escalating 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, he has taken a position that public opinion polls show us is not shared by a majority of Democrats and so he put the national security interests, as he sees it, against, or, ahead of partisan political interests. I give him a lot of credit for that.”
Davis: “Well your good friend, Senator McCain, who shares that committee assignment with you, said today that he thinks ‘it’s a mistake to signal in advance when a troop withdrawal might begin,’ and you usually agree with Senator McCain on stuff, don’t you?”
Lieberman: “I do, first off I want to thank John for actually saying some positive things about the basic policy decision the President made. Normally, I don’t like deadlines like that, I think this morning Secretary Gates was very helpful in pointing out that what the President has said he intends to do is begin to transfer security responsibility to the Afghans more than a year and half from now and do it slowly and responsibly and not just pick up and leave the country but let them take over in relatively safe areas and see how they do. Secretary Gates said today, in response to my question; ‘no, we’re not just going to throw the Afgans in the pool and run away.”
That is the impression that the Defense Secretary gave to the committee today - that the withdrawal won’t be on a hard date but could move depending on how things look on the ground in Afghanistan.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told senators that she doesn’t believe the president is “locked in to leaving,” also indicating the the widthdrawal date is flexible.

Unless this is an overall plan for the Muslim world to kill off our troops as we send them in.
Then we will have no troops and no money left and bow to all the other Nations to help us... like we owe China.
Joseph had the dream in the Bible and all 11 brothers had to go to him to scrounge a meal.

Maybe your party should have stuck with Joe.
You're an a$$. The poster child of a nasty, foul mouthed moron Conservative.
Leiberman was voted out, he was not driven out, because of his support of the failed policies of Anonymous' Messiah.
In your position.
You need God Adoni!~Peace Glenna~
I am glad I a not in the military as Obama as CIC. He has no idea or desire about winning a war.
Well.. isn't that just ignorant!
And who are you calling a Left Wing Loon, Davey? Furthermore we had the right to vote Lieberman out... just like you had the right to vote whomever you like out.
Oh, here is a list of W's failures.
It was Bush –not terrorists –who dismantled our Constitution with the pronouncement that ‘The Constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper’
It was Bush –not terrorists –who declared an end of habeas corpus, due process of law, the right to be secure against unreasonable searches and seizure, the rights of free speech, assembly and petition.
America is broke. In less than five years these borrow and spend-thrifts have nearly doubled our national debt, to a stunning $8.2 trillion. These are not your father's Republicans who treated public dollars as though they were an endangered species.
Katrina Relief... Eleven thousand spanking new mobile homes sinking into the Arkansas mud. Seems no one in the administration knew there were federal and state laws prohibiting trailers in flood zones. Oops. That little mistake cost you $850 million -- and counting.
Do you want me to go on Davey...
It wasn't Bush that started the problem it was the terroist killing many innocent people. And we had to retaliate against it for if you don't they will continue to assault us in our own country they don't like freedom and they Don't like the USA
While I agree, its not as if reading a book to school children when the country is under attack is not indecision.
'It wasn't Bush that started the problem it was the terroist killing many innocent people.'
It wasn't Bush. It was American imperialism.
'...they don't like freedom and they Don't like the USA.'
They do not enjoy being the pawns of the United States.
