RI gov opens door to domestic partnerships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Gov. Don Carcieri, a gay marriage opponent, has opened the door slightly to the limited recognition of same-sex relationships in Rhode Island.

The Republican governor still opposes gay marriage and said during the 2006 election that he opposed civil unions for same-sex couples.

But after a closed-door meeting with a gay rights group, Carcieri told reporters Thursday he would consider creating a domestic partnership system similar to one approved this month by voters in Washington state. That Washington plan will allow same-sex couples benefits such as the right to use sick leave to care for a domestic partner and rights related to adoption, child custody and child support.

Rhode Island’s most vocal gay rights group has been lobbying exclusively for gay marriage.

I am against gay marraige but support civil unions.

I do not support gay couple adoption. Children are not lab rats we can experiment with.

I am sure I will be labeled as a hater - That's what happens whenever you oppose the gay agenda......

As a conservative, I’m against the intrusion of government into peoples’ lives, especially in an economic sense. So why should I care what gays do; it’s their business. If it doesn’t impact my life or wallet, I could care less if two people want to marry, whether gay or heterosexual. If it doesn’t cost/impact me, then I say let them be free to do what makes them happy. After all, we are supposed to be free people.

I support the Constitution (both Federal and State) which provides for a separation between church and state meaning, in this instance, that we can allow gay marriage AND yet your church can still say no to gay marriage, and there ain't nothin the rest of us can do about it.

Oh yeah, and I'm opposed to rednecks, academics who never worked an honest day yet have all the answers and the two-party system.

Out of all the "conservatives" here, Frustrated Taxpayer seems to be the most logical, and have the most level head on his shoulders. Sue and the rest of you hatemongers can lear a lot from him.

In sort, gay marriage doesn't effect you. If you are so worried about government intrustion then stop encouraging government to intrude into my life.
