Who is a protester?

Hartford (WTNH) – I got an interesting question via e-mail today from the News Channel 8 Assignment Desk during the protest in front of the building that houses Senator Joe Lieberman’s office in Hartford.

“How many protesters are there?”

Seems like a simple enough request, but increasingly more difficult to answer in the age of the Internet.

There were about 25 people at the event but several appeared to be bloggers or website operators with cameras documenting the event. Here’s the problem - some of these indivduals were participating in the chants and other slogans about Lieberman’s position on health care reform. They clearly were demonstrating their position on the issue.

So were they ‘journalists’ or ‘protesters?’ I strongly believe in their right to do whatever they wish but I’m afraid I’m not sure how to answer the question from the Assignment Desk.

I'm trying to get through the house bill. Not easy. There is much wrong with this bill and clearly rushed through to meet a legislative deadline. The public option in this bill is a good example. I would urge a rework and hope the senate version is better crafted. I agree with Joe Lieberman at this point. It is a mess. I'm about to urge our other senator to give this particular public option provision a wide bearth until fixed.

I've been reading this bill and I have to say it is very poorly written. I'm an engineer and constantly read documents for the US Navy supporting their submarine fleet. If any engineering document was crafted like this bill the ships would be sunk before getting out of the harbor. Congress people are not engineers yet we trust them to craft what will run our lives and country. If this bill were an engineering document the ship will sink as soon as its put in the water. It's a disgrace.

Why won't they consider fixing just the broken parts of the health care? I think fixing it is not their priority - it's complete control.
