House passes health care bill

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.
The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.
A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.
“It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it,” said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

It appears as thought the U.S. House has done a fair job of representing their constituencies. I'm very happy the 35% with their loud jack-*ss mouths and industry $$$$ have, so far, been unable to bully the 111th. Nice work.
No Jack, this isn't going to bring down our republic by a long shot but it is going to have a serious impact if signed into law.
I can garauntee businesses will drop health care as a benefit package for their employees as quickly as they possibly can as a result and the rolls of this national system will be much higher than anticipated resulting in an increase in taxes for all of us.
Far as next election cycle goes, simple truth is that the party that controls the White House tends to lose control of Congress.
Ever check an itemized bill from a damn hospital for a weeks stay????????
All this pathetic "healthcare" reform bill has done is create ANOTHER "insurer"...and WE or I should say MOST of us will "PAY" dearly for it........
This bill does NOTHING about the bloated costs in the industry from insurance companys to healthcare providers to the the damn Pharmaceutical companys...NOTHING
We in this country STILL will be hosed big time...be asked to contribute MORE & more...........
This pathetic system of ours is "over valued"........
"Dump Dodd"
The health care bill won't pass in the senate, thank God. Lets face it there are much better ways to fix this problem like regulating the health care system.
I hate to say it but the democrats have made their bed and now have to lie in it. Now the the republicans will most likely take over congress or at least bring it to a 50-50 pass nothing congress in 2010.
What I would like to see is a new 3rd party to start that listen to the people of this country and do what they want.
If you haven't spoken out, then this ludicrous vote MAY be partially your fault! We must let them know we are against this public option.
There are some very good things in this bill, but the public option is not one of them! I will NOT vote for anyone who votes for that option.
YOU HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW YOU WILL NOT VOTE FOR THEM AGAIN!
My message to the government moochers that vote in the Democrats is move to another country so we can correct the spending problems in the USA.
Third parties exist, that do speak to people's needs. Yet, the vast majority view them as throw-away votes.
The president is expected to sign on to this to "The World Government" and when that happens we will have no more Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc. Not only will the U.S. have to pay big bucks to the countries not emitting as much greenhouse gas. The World Government will dictate to us what we will and will not do. Well how do you all like that hope and change? There will be no way to get out of the treaty unless all countries agree and why should they when they will get money from the U.S. Oh by the way China and India will not sign the treaty, they are not stupid like our Educated Chicago Gangster.
The vast majority are for it, if you are to read the aggregate of polling.
'We should eliminate all political parties-- all they do is cater to special interest groups, encourage corruption, and elevate their selves above the public good.'
You are partially correct. The two corporate parties that run our political system do, but most grassroots independent parties do not. Though, I must agree with the crux of your argument on banning them.
'The president is expected to sign on to this to "The World Government" and when that happens we will have no more Constitution, Bill of Rights, etc.'
Firstly, he hasn't even stated whether he will be attending the conference. So 'expected to sign' is rather hasty. This can also be said for Hu Jintao. Secondly, you're reading rather too much into the actual plans being presented, and the plausibility of them actually passing.
'Not only will the U.S. have to pay big bucks to the countries not emitting as much greenhouse gas. The World Government will dictate to us what we will and will not do.'
You either want to live in a global community and fess up to the crimes we allowed, or not. You can't have your capitalism and eat it too.
A recent poll stated 61% for it but it was a questionable poll.
You can get the results you want by who you ask and how you ask them.
The results of the 2009 elections are a good way to see what people think. It looks like to me in 2010 the democrats are in big trouble.
From your post, when they take away the few rights that you cherish and support it will be too late to do anything, because they will have stripped away those the rest of us care about long before that.
There is a reason the Constitution has a 2nd Amendment... and why it falls immediately after the 1st...
But you in your radical desire to embrace the end of freedom in America will most likely be happy living as a minion to the socialistic whims of Europe and the UN
"" You either want to live in a global community and fess up to the crimes we allowed, or not. You can't have your capitalism and eat it too. ""
You are quite correct in your assessment.
As I've said time and again, our health care system doesn't need to be reformed (i.e. born-again)... it just needs to be tweaked and regulated.
They already know what's wrong with it in DC, but instead of legislating and regulating the industry itself, they've decided we all need to move to the left and journey downward into a socialized medicine solution.
Obama won't be satisfied 'til we are pledging allegiance to the UN...
Now I see why Able is such a booster of Obama. What "crimes" do you suggest we fess up to Able? What kind of horrible abuses do you and Obama want to accusse the American people of now? It seems you're a stand up guy, when do you plan on going to the Hague and throwing yourself on the mercy of the world court? Are you planning on any reparations for your crimes? Maybe giving back your home, car, and personal property and bank accounts to a Obama sponsored fund to pay back the world? You're the worst type of insidious little anti-American. Our crimes huh? That's nice, now go tell Russia, China, India, England, Japan, France....you get the idea. But that doesn't matter because for some reason the socialist clowns like you just see America as enemy #1 to your global community.
When I hear voices that tend to be largely supported by the insurance industry comlain on one side that the governemnt can't run a business efficiently and then on the other that they couldn't compete with governemnt-run provider it makes me doubt the credibility of the source.
I have heard alot of fears and doubts about "public options" but very little hard evidence, data or clear logic on how it would lead us into ruin. I can however clearly understand how it would keep pricing in the industry more "honest", especially in a market that we would all be required to enter. If the bill will artificially increase the demand for healthcare insurance by law, shouldn't it also provide some controls or regulations on it's pricing?
Nearly everyone agrees healthcare insurance need an overhaul and most Connecticut people polled seem to agree with the need for a public option. So why is our Senator vociferously threatening to prevent the passage of such a bill based on no clearly founded reason other than his conscience when seemingly in direct opposition to the wishes of a majority of his constituency.
Maybe there is a better plan to be had but, my personal read is that all the hostility against "public options" is mostly a lot of industry-promoted campaigning and foot-dragging against having health care insurance meaningfully and fairly reformed.
900 billion cost estimate, after stealling 500 billion from Medicare....
Just wondering who do the elitist liberals actually think is going to pay for this, that small segment of the population that can 'afford' to ???
Where do you think the bill for this monstrosity of a bonndoggle is going to end up in a couple of years time??
Right in the laps of the majority of us who do bother to attain an education AND keep a job and thus pay the taxes to support those who don't... plain and simple.
The Democrats in D.C. are following the same playbook that the Democrats here in CT are using... run up spending, increase the taxes on the business climate and people on payroll.
Then when the whole thing finally implodes and folds like a house of cards, blame the Republicans.... It's working so well here in CT so they may as well the same thing in DC.
I am not sure what polling you're seeing, but the aggregate polling data for the last decade has shown from 54-57% support for government healthcare. Polls, are unreliable, but they are no more or less reliable than that of uninformed voters.
'Hey Able, 57% of people are against socialized healthacre. That's not a vast majority being for it. You had a good comment upthread, but are right back into the stupidity with this one.'
Actually, most polls indicate the exact opposite. So again, I'm right and you are uninformed.
'... when they take away the few rights that you cherish and support it will be too late to do anything, because they will have stripped away those the rest of us care about long before that.'
Our rights have already been destroyed or have been eroded for quite some time, to believe otherwise is to ignore fact.
'There is a reason the Constitution has a 2nd Amendment... and why it falls immediately after the 1st...'
Yeah, because at one point we needed a regulated militia, but please show me where these exist today.
'But you in your radical desire to embrace the end of freedom in America will most likely be happy living as a minion to the socialistic whims of Europe and the UN'
Actually, I am anti-hierarchy, so therefore your statement is based on faulty judgment and an illogical thought process.
'Now I see why Able is such a booster of Obama.'
Actually, I am a booster for Ralph Nader, for that is who I voted for. I am staunchly opposed to this healthcare reform, as I've state countless times and side only with single-payer healthcare.
'What kind of horrible abuses do you and Obama want to accusse the American people of now?'
I don't care what Obama accuses you of, for he is at the whim of corporate entities. I wish the accuse the American people of the greatest crime of all; complacent ignorance.
'It seems you're a stand up guy, when do you plan on going to the Hague and throwing yourself on the mercy of the world court?'
I need not, for I acknowledge the crimes our nation commits against humanity and each day I attempt to end those injustices.
'Maybe giving back your home, car, and personal property and bank accounts to a Obama sponsored fund to pay back the world?'
Firstly, I don't own a car, so I can't do that. Secondly, Obama doesn't want to give anything back, because he isn't a Socialist or a progressive, he is a corporate carrier pigeon. You're making a rather large fool of yourself as you're unable to differ from those on the far-left (myself) and Obama, and that shows how misinformed you are on issues.
'You're the worst type of insidious little anti-American.'
If I was anti-American then I wouldn't attempt to fix the ills we have in this nation. You can be slanderous all you want, but it is merely a petty attempt to make up for lack of an argument.
'But that doesn't matter because for some reason the socialist clowns like you just see America as enemy #1 to your global community.'
That's because we are, and I'm not a Socialist, so thanks for playing.
As usual, your zealous rage has again created another mindless rant that is as far off of the societal meter as one can get.
You quote a philosophy that is solely of your own making and makes perfect sense to you, yet leaves the rest of us baffled as to what you actually stand for in this world.
Your sense of your own superiority obvious outweighs your common sense.
I hope the weather was as nice in your world today as it was here.....
Oh yes, and please do remember to start taking your meds again...
Please show examples in which I am 'zealous' or filled with 'rage.' Thanks.
'You quote a philosophy that is solely of your own making and makes perfect sense to you, yet leaves the rest of us baffled as to what you actually stand for in this world.'
Actually, the political philosophy that I follow is real, and has existed for, what many anthropologists believe, before recorded history. Perhaps you should research my beliefs, for it is not hard based on any comments I make, what it is. Is it my fault you're too narrow minded to know the full spectrum? Perhaps, you should ask, if you wish to know?
'Your sense of your own superiority obvious outweighs your common sense.'
Show examples please, thanks.
'I hope the weather was as nice in your world today as it was here..... '
It was beautiful with a chance of toxins.
'Oh yes, and please do remember to start taking your meds again... '
Ah. The beauty of public discourse. When another member of the discussion lacks actual points, they resort to petty attacks to fill the hot streaming from their gaping wound they call a mouth.
Your tiresome rants are about 600 years too late...
In the past you've made comments that are quite mundane and foolish...
-You hate the concept of money...
-You loathe the idea of 'owning' a home...
-You are anti-hierarchal...
blah, blah, blah... You think you have the market cornered on intellectual superiority with your snide and condescending posts.
You make a pale attempt at being some sort of vulcan logic master...
we're quite tired of your usual discourse is all.....
'-You hate the concept of money.'
I do not hate the concept of money. The conception of money is merely a facet of the monetary society for which we live, to have hatred for an inanimate object is foolish, it is merely the actions taken by others based upon this object that I am deeply offended by.
'-You loathe the idea of 'owning' a home.'
I've never said this, and actually do own a home, as has been stated many times upon this blog. I do not own a car, perhaps you have mixed the two up, which is bound to happen due to countless posts made over the years.
'-You are anti-hierarchal.'
The word is hierarchical, and yes. How is this either mundane or foolish?
'blah, blah, blah... You think you have the market cornered on intellectual superiority with your snide and condescending posts.'
Not really. But, I do find it comical that people say that my views on issues are not known, yet you refuse to ask for them, or refuse to read my posts.
'we're quite tired of your usual discourse is all.....'
You're tired because you're unable to fight me on issues, and merely use baseless claims and flaccid conjecture to convey points. A poor man indeed you are, for you are not worth your weight.
-the concept of money.
-idea of 'owning' a home.
-you are anti-hierarchical.
(yes, I spelled it incorrectly before, it was late and I was tired, sorry)
You seem to be against the things that have become the thread of our society and as such sound to be against society as well.
As I have said before, your posts are filled with snide and condescending remarks. When someone posts in kind, it suddenly wrong for them to do so.
So like I said, yeah we're tired of your 'usual discourse'...
