Bill OK'd to improve diversity in Coast Guard

WASHINGTON (AP) – The House voted overwhelmingly for a bill that includes a provision giving members of Congress a say over who is admitted to the U.S. Coast Guard’s 1,000-cadet service academy in New London, Conn.
The measure – part of a multi-billion-dollar authorization bill that passed 385-11 on Friday – was sponsored by Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., who argues that congressional nominations are needed to help increase the number of blacks enrolled at the academy and graduate as commissioned officers.
The school is the only service academy that does not have congressional nominations and has no requirements for geographical distribution.
Four blacks graduated in the spring. More recently, five blacks were admitted for the Class of 2013. At present, its four classes include 25 blacks.

This was sneak attack by congressman cummings to get back at the guard for what he perceives to be discrimination. Blacks already have admission advantages, they just don't apply, so elijah says let's dumb it down even more. So far the Senate is holding it off, and the coast guard brass is diplomatically trying to kill this dumb dumb idea. Leave merit advancements in the military, our freedom depends on it.

The coast guard has been saving our boating butts for over 100 years. Admission was intentially left out of congresses hands to keep politics out of it. Do we really want the sons and daughters of the politically connected to start saving our lives?

From my 50 years +2 on this planet,I have never seen a black person at the beach or swim in the water.
I think they are water shy.
So the few who do enroll should write aa book to encourage other black folk to swim in water where there are no sharks,jellyfish,ect.

As someone who was accepted for the CGA but attended the Naval Academy, there are a few things people here should understand. Often the CGA is more competative because of its method of nomination. Most coast guard officers spend their time in US areas doing open water policing and rescue rather than "military action" forwhich Able talks about. The corps is fairly diverse in terms of women. Should they change their entrance criteria to give minorities a better shake? Maybe ifit would work. However, the service academies commissioned a study run by a hispanic admiral on this subject. His conclusion was that blacks who are as qualified as their white counter parts are actively recruited by all other universities and that they attend those schools without the obligation that a service academy requires.
