Why is there never any mention of making parents accountable? Parents are the first teachers and yet so many do not place an emphasis on education and many do not discipline their children. It shouldn't be up to the schools to raise the children - they are there to educate them! A teacher can't educate if the child is sleepy, hungry, out of control, but yet we expect this of our schools.
Bad teachers - get rid of them. Merit pay - reminds me of CEO bonuses. This doesn't bode well for our school systems. Sounds like more testing and less teaching will be our children's future. As for charter schools - make them take the same tests as the public schools and then MAYBE I would consider sending my child to one.
I, who have supported Obama on many things, believe he is missing the mark on this one!
Less testing = More teaching
Parent accountability is a missing piece of the puzzle. Sending our children to school for a longer day becasue children in South Korea go to school a longer day - why don't we just send the children away to boarding school and get it over with!

If my tax money is going to pay them, then I want them paid based on their merit. If they can't cut it then out the door with them.

You know what they say...those who can-do and those who can't-teach!

Teachers should be paid on based on merit. Every other professional position is paid based on merit. They should also not be able to get tenure. The problem is the USA pays more per student than any other country but the majority of that money goes to teachers pensions. The kids aren't getting the benefit of that money. The public sector pensions will eventually collape the states (like CA)but that is another topic.

That being said, parents also have to be accountable for their chidren. Why should we spend millions of dollars on pre-K. Having children is a responsibility and having them prepared for Kindergarten is part of it. Every parent with a high school diploma is capable of prepaing their child for Kindergarten. It just takes time - get off the sofa and get busy. I have three children and my husband and I spend a lot of time helping them with homework & projects. Do I always feel like it - Heck, No but I know it's vital for their success.

Before the teacher bashing begins - ask one about their pay. Don't make assumptions. My husband gets paid to do a job, not merit. Military are paid to do a job, not on merit. Factory workers do a shift and go home -it's not per piece.
Heck, even McDonald's doesn't pay based on merit!
As for your tax dollars going for 'THEIR' pensions - teachers contribute from their pay and don't get Social Security.
Parents need to parent and we need to stop expecting the school to fix the kids. Public schools take every child - disruptive, disabled, gifted, or not. Charter schools and private schools can be choosey.

Are there bad teachers - yes but it isn't the majority. This nation teaches to a test. We no longer want children to be educated, we want to produce workers. We have shifted our dogma in this society away from educating children to a Marxism based approach. Educate to support the ecomony as it exists instead of expanding the knowledge and therefore the economy by expanding what we are capable of.

I must agree with the above post. If there are bad teachers, then yes get rid of them, or place them on a probationary merit system to see if they can improve.

Our system is made to educate students to a point, that point being the ability to use machinery or work in a factory. Nothing more. We create robots.
