Mayor signs new Hartford immigration ordinance

Hartford (AP) – Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez has signed a new ordinance that bars police from asking people about their immigration status.
The ordinance, passed last week by the city council, would prevent police from arresting or detaining anyone solely because immigration authorities had issued an administrative warrant for them, which is a civil matter.
However, Perez says the ordinance requires that police notify federal authorities if someone they arrests turns out to be an illegal alien.
The mayor says it also requires that city employees deny any federally funded services to illegal immigrants if required to do so under federal law.

I give him credit though IF there is any truth to the part about not giving federal services to the illegals and turning them in when they DO find out they are illegal...something that the criminal mayor of New Haven DOESNT do..............
It's a travisty of justice.
Get the picture...get the DEMS out of office and maybe, just maybe the concept of illegal will be realized again
Se se puede.
Human Rights is one thing and I have no issue if these people want to better themselves by coming into this country LEGALLY.
What about our Rights? You know the rights of the LEGAL citizens. When you left leaners condone the illegals in this country you put a strain on the system that we LEGAL honest people pay our hard earned taxes into.
Why do you guys have such an issue with the meaning of the word ILLEGAL?
No human is illegal, so please refrain from using such a derogatory and insensitive term to describe human beings.
Everyone has rights, no Constitution or border give them those, they are basic human values that are innate. It is governments and individuals who attempt to corrupt them.
The strain is put on the system by corporate greed. Undocumented workers are paid far less than their documented counterparts, and tend to do jobs that no others wish to do. The only 'strain' you see is them applying for federal assistance that you are unable to get because you are far too wealthy (the you is not directed at you specifically, but it may very well be the case.)
We put our hard earned tax money into the federal reserve and the Iraq War, both fraudulent systems that Americans seem happy paying into. Why do you have such a problem with the terms undocumented worker and compassion?
We are screwed. At least they could assimilate into our culture like previous generations of immigrant Americans but they dont want to.
Or how bout this...learn to speak English. Maybe that would help them.
If this country does not fix the problem soon we will eventually turn into a 3rd world nation. Just look at how bad our cities have gotten over the past 20-30 years.
Its not hard to figure out why. Cities like Hartford and New Haven used to be beautiful cities where families lived in safety. Now look at them.
I am so sick of these liberal nutbags telling us that these people have more rights than those of us who were born here, work here and pay taxes here.
I think DeStefano should be thrown in jail for all the bulls**t he is doing to coddle the illegals.
If INS was doing their job we would be rid of these people who are straining all of our budgets because we have to pay for them as well.
No need to sugarcoat it for anyone, especially in this age of political correctness.
I work in New Haven and the city is becoming a real dump. If not for Yale, (which however has illegals working all over it) the city would be just plain horrible.
Destefano is a complete fool just pandering for votes like most politicans. And Perez? Come on, didnt he just get called out recently for some shady business deal?
And yes, us hard working people who are trying to do the right thing get screwed by this stuff. Our healthcare costs are skyrocketing while service is getting worse. Social services in general stink. And our education system is becoming a joke nationwide.
Get a grip on this issue and you will see healthcare costs level and in some cases decrease.
And its not that these people take jobs others wont do, they just will take them for near nothing. When I was a teenager I worked landscaping and loved it. I wish I could open my own company and compete. I can't because I would do it legally and have insurance for my workers and proof of citizenship, etc. The guy hiring the illegals wins with low bid every time cause he does not have to pay costs like me.
Just wonderful.
But
the world isnt and never will be set up that way......
The citys of this damn state are becoming 3rd world crapholes...all of them......
Its a human rights thing......lol.......right
Any normal thinking person gets the concept of "illegal immigrants/aliens"
When is the silent majority going to stand up collectively and say enough is enough?
If the Illegals come here come in LEGALLY not jumping a fence or sneaking in on a truck.
They should learn how to play by the rules and speak English and they shouldnt put instructions in spanish or any other language.
And now some of these Liberal idiots want to change the State Constitution so we end up becoming California East.
A vote for Obama or any Liberal is a recipe for Disaster.
Arnie and DH keep up the great posts.
First of all, English is not the official language of the country, therefore no one should have to learn any language. What the presumed language is of the country is a different case, but there is no official language so complaining that any individual whether they speak Spanish, French, Dutch or Russian is a moot point for the reason I've stated.
'I'm a former democrat turned independent due to the crazy left wing liberals who are ruining our country with this stuff.'
At least you're an independent, which is what I can respect. But to say that 'left wing liberals' are running the country is obviously ridiculous, you have confused individuals who were brought up through the new left with what a true liberal is. Members of the far left don't approve of anything that most members of Congress do.
'Cities like Hartford and New Haven used to be beautiful cities where families lived in safety. / I work in New Haven and the city is becoming a real dump. If not for Yale, (which however has illegals working all over it) the city would be just plain horrible."
Yes, Yale is the major organization within New Haven and without it the city would fail. It supplies most of the employment for the city, the city grew up AROUND the university, not vice versa.
'Our healthcare costs are skyrocketing while service is getting worse. Social services in general stink. And our education system is becoming a joke nationwide.'
Health is a fundamental right, that is why a single-payer universal healthcare system is the only viable option. I agree with you on the other points as well. But to say we need to 'get a grip' on this issue and it'll be fixed is laughable, we need to readjust our priorities and realize that corporate greed is what funnels the healthcare system, not need.
Those hiring undocumented workers for lower prices are doing not only the country a disservice, but those individuals who are working for them.
'I am so sick of these liberal nutbags telling us that these people have more rights than those of us who were born here, work here and pay taxes here.'
Liberals do not say such baseless things. We believe that EVERYONE should have the same right regardless of location, age, 'legality', sex or race. Many undocumented workers who apply for jobs do pay taxes but aren't able to see anything in return for it, therefore it goes into the system.
You may not like DeStefano, but he can't be thrown in jail for anything. The ID program is set up for New Haven citizens, whether or not undocumented workers use the system is arbitrary.
'Here we go with all that human rights CRAP./Human rights issue my 'ass'..........'
To quote The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations, for which the United States of America is a part;
"Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty."
'Maybe if we start treating criminals like criminals we wouldn't have to be afraid to walk on our streets.'
So is that to say that because someone is an undocumented worker that means they are a rapist, murderer or thief? How preposterous.
'But some of the candya** liberals who choose to blog here when they should go elsewhere are such a bunch of socialist/communists and want everything to be so Politically Correct.'
Why should we go anywhere else? This blog is open for political discourse of all kinds, are you truly afraid of all other viewpoints and need to be force fed your own so you sleep well at night? I adsorb, admire and respect all your opinions regardless of how I feel about them, perhaps you should do the same. Communists and Socialist are not the same by the way, and they don't ask for political correctness. You need to understand what these words are before you start ranting.
'DH.. You are so right. These Left leaning anti war liberal with their political correctness BS want to give these Illegals(this is what they are-they are here illegally without proper papers)a free pass.'
What does anti-war have to do with being pro immigration? The war and immigration are not mutually exclusive, so adding that in was nothing more than baiting. Also, an individual cannot be illegal, because a person cannot be a crime.
'We are screwed. At least they could assimilate into our culture like previous generations of immigrant Americans but they dont want to.'
Assimilate into our culture? America is a melting pot of many different cultures, including Hispanic, European, African, etc. Previous groups came here and worked, but maintained their own traditions. Why do you think there is a Little Italy and a China Town?
The police are there for any illegal activity's, isn't being an illegal immigrant illegal?
Its not the same today AT ALL so you cannot make that comparison.
You make some fair points but you may not be living in complete reality.
You act as if these individuals are rodents are full of diseases, out to rape, murder and steal from all they can, which is preposterous. Being Italian-American, Chinese-American, etc. still means they hold onto their traditions that is why they are ETHNICITY first, and then American.
It is the same today, times have changed. I will use a tried and true right wing saying; If you don't like it, move somewhere else.
You have points, just no empirical data to back any of it up.
Its not preposterous. By them not being legal is stealing.
No, they used to come to this country to become Americans. Now it is much different. It is not that hard to see what is going on.
You are defending something that is illegal.
They don't come to this country to be Americans? Then, what do they come for? To be.. French?
You're defending a human rights violation.
It is just absolutely awful.
Human rights BS is just a cop out.
They come to this country to leach off the services that are provided to them. Many want to impose their culture and trample the hard work of our founding fathers.
And unfortunately elected officials are helping do so.
You dont have to look any further than the ridiculous ID card scam in New Haven.
It is much different. No question about it.
Second back then it was a diferent time and a total different set of circumstances than it is now......"ILLEGALS" are sucking us DRY and that ISNT a human rights issue.....
Back to when I got here? I was born here, and I was born here in the 1980's. So back when I 'got here', there were plenty of freebies.. my education was free, I had fire and police service in my town, garbage and recycling pickup. Odd, those are all free.
'"ILLEGALS" are sucking us DRY and that ISNT a human rights issue...../Human rights BS is just a cop out.'
It is a human rights issue, perhaps you don't understand what human rights are? Or the fact that the United States of America is mandated by more than one resolution to uphold them for citizens and non-citizens alike if they are within the borders of this nation. Review these resolutions and you will see it is not a cop out, you just lack compassion for any individual who isn't American. Being American is a label, it is far less important than being human.
'I have seen "illegal" workers taking advantage and laughing about it every day.'
I see more people who are 'legal' abuse the system then those who aren't. I tend to see undocumented workers doing their job and busting their hump.
'They come to this country to leach off the services that are provided to them. Many want to impose their culture and trample the hard work of our founding fathers.
And unfortunately elected officials are helping do so.'
The services are provided to them, so how can they be leaching off of them? They're provided, they use them, some don't. It is not as if they're tapping into something that they can't be. Impose their culture? America is a hodgepodge of many cultures, as I said before... China Town, Little Italy, etc. are all examples of this. Our founding fathers, many of them were either not born in this country or descendants of people who were 'illegal immigrants', who came to a land that was not theirs, and savaged the native people under the concept of Manifest Destiny.
'You dont have to look any further than the ridiculous ID card scam in New Haven.'
The ID Card system is setup for New Haven residents, it is not a scam. It is for those who wish to receive benefits from the city. The last I looked, having a library card is a way of receiving benefits from a city as well. Also, to obtain the card you must show proof of living in New Haven in the form of a bill. So, it appears these workers, who you say leach off the system in New Haven, are in fact paying bills. Odd.
'Many of my relatives are Italian and Hispanic. They consider themselves Americans first. They learned to communicate effectively, they embraced the values of our country and are now distraught over how things have changed.'
That is great for them, and if that is how they feel, then that is amazing. There are individuals born here who cannot communicate correctly and make no attempt to, what of them? Also, as stated before there is no official language to the United States. Therefore if a language barrier exists, then it is something you must deal with.
Times change. Accept and move on.
And I DO have compassion for people who are other than American.
Do you think then if you went to a different country where they spoke a language you could not speak you should have to learn theirs or they should somehow figure out how to communicate effectively to you?
And yes the card system in New Haven is a scam. It gives discounted services to "ILLEGAL" people.
What do you not understand about that???
America has no official language, the unofficial may be English, but many things are also in Spanish.
What I don't understand is how a person can be illegal? How can a person be a crime?
So you are basing the entire immigrant population on the possible home of one? Odd.
